Biography

KALKIDAN GEBREYOHANNES

Ethiopian born, Canadian raised and currently residing in Oakland, CA, Kalkidan has an extensive background in the arts and started her artistic and creative journey at the age of seven. Her past experiences as a ballerina, writer, athlete, makeup artist, and personal shopper/stylist were all preparations for a bigger endeavor, KALU. On the beach in Santa Monica, shortly after having her second child in 2012, a conversation with one of her best friends lead to the idea of designing handbags. It was after this inspiring beach trip that Kalkidan embarked upon the journey of entrepreneurship.

Adjusting to life as a mother of two, she knew it was important that her brand catered to women who wanted to maintain their fashionable self expression but had limited time.  After 2 and a half years of perfecting her designs, sourcing materials and mastering her craft she was able to launch KALU in December of 2014 with her first collection Le Rêve- The Dream.

Kalkidan is a mother of three and a fiercely passionate designer and entrepreneur. She feels empowered by the challenge of balancing her personal and business life and is honored to be able to do what she loves!

"I understand how busy women are, if I can give them a few minutes of their day back by creating pieces that will seamlessly blend with their existing wardrobe, while providing them with products that speak to the way they want to express themselves, I have achieved my vision for my designs and my brand." - Kalkidan Gebreyohannes
